Tuesday: A Day

Aim: How do humans impact their environment?

Do Now: What is needed for survival of the human species? O, Food, Shelter, Water, Sunlight, Metabolic activities, sexual reproduction.

Procedure: Students will discuss the cause and effect of human activities on all of the necessary variables for human life. Begin with oxygen. Discuss the burning of fossil fuels. This produces smoke, ash, soot, sulfur, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. This is the cause. The effect is: Global warming/greenhouse effect. Gradual increase of the earths temeperature. Acid rain: harms organisms in bodies of water, plants, crops, harms marble and stone buildings. Smog: smoke+gas+fog warmed by sunlight. Deforestation: cutting down trees/depleting the rainforests takes oxygen out of atmosphere.

WaterPollution: Cause: Pollution is caused by pesticides, sewage, heavy metals, phosphates, PCBs, acid rain, etc. Effect: contaminated water supply, contaminated soil, animal endangerment/extinction, and mutations of species.

Homework # 16: List five ways that you have polluted the environment. Now list five ways you can help to improve our environment.

Wednesday: B Day

Aim: To continue discussing humans impact on our environment.

Do Now: Create a chart in notebooks that we can complete throughout discussion.

Procedure: Students must complete a cause and effect chart throughout the discussion of environmental problems. List: Problem, Cause, Effect, Solution. Discuss renewable vs. non renewable resources. Study guides need to be completed. AFTERSCHOOL LAB CLASS FOR DIFFUSION: 2:30-4:30pm

Homework #17: Construct a graph for the data table on page one of  your study guide.

Thursday: A Day

Aim: What is succession?

Do Now: List six laws that have been instituted to help improve the environment. Page 225

Procedure: What is succession? What happens when we cut down forests? How long does it take for a terrestrial or aquatic ecosystem to replace itself? Answer these and other questions about succession. Use the environmental study guide to reinforce lesson. Students will identify stages of succession and will list changes that occurred in an aquatic environment. Complete a scientific review passage from page 233-234 of review book.

Homework #18: Read pages 33-35 and then answer questions on Page 36 37 in UPCO Review book complete questions #1-9 Review classification of living things

Friday: B Day

Aim: What is a nonrenewable resource?

Do Now: List oil, gas, wind, soil, water, mineral deposits like iron, coal, oxygen, plants and animals. Which of these items if we ran out of them could not be replaced? Why?

Procedure: Explain what a natural resource is. Discuss conservation of these resources and why it is needed. Renewable vs. non renewable resources. List them in categories on the board.  Complete some review materials from review book. Will assign as needed within each class.

Homework #19: Complete questions #1-11 on Pages 45 and 46 of your UPCO review book.

Weekend Assignment:

Aim: To practice a Living Environment Regents examination

Do Now: Distribute regents packets and briefly discuss the process.

Procedure: Students will actually take part of the exam today and will be given the answers when we go over the questions. Students will continue this exam on Monday. They will complete the entire test.
