Monday: B Day

Aim: What are the reproductive cells of bread mold?

Do Now: Students will draw a diagram of bread mold and label the reproductive cells. Get lab folder and record lab #13. Bread mold: Asexual reproduction

Procedure: Students will create slides of bread mold to view the reproductive cells. They will also use a hand lens and a stereoscopic microscope to view the mold. Students will be responsible for the lab on page 333-334 in their UPCO Books. Sexual and Asexual idea maps on pages 504 and 507 should be copied into notebooks.

Homework # 18: Complete the Asexual Reproduction worksheet.

Tuesday: A Day

Aim: Can I identify the type of asexual reproduction conducted by various organisms?

Do Now: Get Lab Folders and record lab. Lab #14: Sexual vs. Asexual

Procedure: Students will have to look at specimen of various organisms in both pictures and under a microscope. They will create a chart and log each organism and the type of reproduction it uses. Skill practice in the UPCO Book on page 336 will also be completed for this lab. Show students asexual reproduction occurring on video disc.

Homework #19: Quiz tomorrow. Complete the study guide worksheet.

Wednesday: B Day

Aim: What are the features of sexual reproduction?

Do Now: List terms on the board and ask students to match them with their definition.

Procedure: Ask students what facts they know about sexual reproduction. Create a KWL chart. Notes should include: Sexual Reproduction: Sex cells(gametes) sperm and egg. Draw them on board. Organs that form the gametes are the testes and the ovaries. Meiosis takes place. Mating takes place. Fertilization takes place. Offspring will not be identical to parents. They will have different features. Discuss features of internal and external fertilization. External: sperm and egg join outside the organism Ex. Fish and frogs.  Most live in water or near water. Young are not cared for; after birth they are on their own. They give off thousands of gametes at a time. They can not assure fertilization. They gather in large groups to reproduce. Internal fertilization is the joining of the egg and sperm inside the body of the female organism. Most animals on land reproduce internally. Ex: insects, reptiles, birds, mammals. Look at various animals and decide whether they reproduce internally or externally. Use the laser disc to see external fertilization occur. Complete the enrichment activity. Page 26 of enrichment worksheets. Complete reteaching worksheet Page 73.

Homework #20: Complete questions 1-6 on page 339 of UPCO book.

Thursday: A Day

Aim: Do all animals reproduce all the time?

Do Now: Answer this: What are two ways that animals improve chances of external fertilization?

Procedure: Students will define estrous cycle and gestation period. and we will discuss its meaning. Students will answer questions 6-8 on page 510 of the Glencoe text. We will look at the breeding seasons of  various animals and we will discuss their gestation period.

Homework #21: UPCO Book Page 35-36 Questions 1-7 NOTEBOOK CHECK TOMORROW

Friday: A Day

Aim: To review for state exams: Regents Practice Questions

Do Now: Review books: Topic 1 Page 1-13

Procedure: Half the class of students will complete review questions on pages 13 Part A. 1-21and the other half will complete Part B 22-33 of their review books. When finished we will have a science bee with questions and each half of the class will play against the other for 5 points on next weeks test. They will also have a notebook check today. Study for your mid-term which will be given on January 23rd.

Monday: A Day

Aim: How do animals reproduce asexually?

Do Now: Examine some of the organisms in class. Hydra, amoeba, paramecium, planarian, starfish. How would these organisms reproduce? DO they have reproductive parts?

Procedure: Sometimes only one parent is necessary for reproduction. Have students provide information they already know about asexual reproduction in a KWL chart. (1. Egg and sperm not used. 2. Sexual organs are not present 3. There is no meiosis. 4. Mitosis is involved. 5. Offspring are identical to one another. CLONES) Discuss types of asexual reproduction: Budding: Hydra, Regeneration: Starfish and planarian, Sporulation: Mushroom or bread mold, Binary fission: amoeba, paramiecium and bacteria

Homework #3: UPCO BOOK page 329 Part A, B, and C all questions.

Tuesday: B Day Afternoon IEP Training

Aim: To enhance their science glossaries

Do Now: Draw a picture that shows how a hydra reproduces asexually.

Procedure: Students will use the terms in their UPCO books on page 335. They will define each term in their science glossaries.

Homework: Free Homework night for all.

Wednesday: A Day

Aim: What are the reproductive cells of bread mold?

Do Now: Students will draw a diagram of bread mold and label the reproductive cells. Get lab folder and record Lab #8. Bread mold: Asexual reproduction: Use Lab investigation sheet from page 333 in UPCO book.

Procedure: Students will create slides of bread mold to view the reproductive cells. They will also use a hand lens and a stereoscopic microscope to view the mold. Students will be responsible for the lab on page 333-334 in their UPCO Books. Sexual and Asexual idea maps on pages 504 and 507 should be copied into notebooks.

Homework #4: UPCO Book: Complete Part D, E and F on pages 331-331. ALl questions

Thursday: B Day

Aim: How do animals reproduce sexually?

Do Now: Make a list of everything you already know about sexual reproduction.

Procedure: Sometimes two parents are necessary for reproduction. Have students provide information they already know about sexual reproduction in a KWL chart. (1. Egg and sperm are used. 2. Sexual organs are present 3. There is meiosis. 4. Mating is involved. 5. Offspring are different from the parents and can have better traits than the parent.  DEFINE FERTILIZATION: Egg ans Sperm join outside the body. Students will see how fertilization occurs two ways. External fertilization occurs outside the body. Most animals with E.F. live in or near water. Discuss the need. How can these animals ensure that the egg and sperm meets? Thousands of sex cells, gather in large groups, Fish starfish, sponges and frogs.  INTERNAL FERTILIZATION: joining of egg and sperm inside the female organism. Reproduce on land, usually protect their young and care for their young. Allows for reproduction out of water. Example: humans, mammals. Show external fertilization on the laser disc player. Complete the enrichment activity

Friday: A Day

Aim: What is a breeding season and an estrous cycle?

Do Now: Complete the idea map for sexual reproduction

Procedure: Students will define a breeding season: Time of year when animals reproduce. Many animals breed in the Spring or when weather conditions are optimal. Deer breed in the fall. What is an estrous cycle? A cycle in which the female will only mate at certain times. Ex: dogs: two per year, rats every five days a cow has a 20 day cycle. Female humans have a 28 day cycle.  A gestation period is the time a female carries the young for. How long they are pregnant. Complete the check your understanding questions on page 506 and 510 questions 1-10. Complete the bar graphs comparing estrous
